To make the best use of the massive stimulus package, China is to build the world's longest bridge to connect mainland China,Hong Kong and Macao to bring the economic ties closer.
The Y-shaped bridge, whose construction began on Tuesday, will start from the Lantau Island in Hong Kong, with two ends respectively located in Macao and Zhuhai, China's southern economic hub of Guangdong province, reports Xinhua news agency.
The total length of the bridge is about 50 kilometer, of which 35 kilometer will be built over the sea. It will take only 30 minutes to travel from Zhuhai to Hong Kong or Macao to Hong Kong after the completion, compared with the current three hours.
An artificial island will also be build to hold a tunnel linking the bridge, according to the construction plan.
Armed with the earthquake resistance structure and anti-hurricane technology, the bridge is expected to serve for 120 years.
"It can withstand the impact of a strong wind with a speed of 51 meters per second... and it can also resist the impact of 8-magnitude quake," said Zhu Yongling, the official in charge of the construction.
The project, which costs about 73 billion yuan ($10.7 billion USD), is financed jointedly by mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao.
China is notoriously for the terrible quality of construction. Two days ago, an one-year-old bridge in Nanjing, a 50-million-yuan ($7.3 million USD) project, was reported to have over 30 cracks. Faced with the strong pressure among angry local people, the Nanjing government later apologized for the poor quality.
In May 2008, thousands of students were killed by the poorly built schools during the massive earthquake in Wenchuan, Sichuan province.
